What it does.
Most of the problem usually sits in a handful of causes. The Pareto chart is the standard way to find them: bars sorted largest first, a cumulative line climbing across them, and a threshold separating the vital few worth acting on from the trivial many that are not.
Power BI can draw sorted bars and a line on a second axis, but it will not sort by value, accumulate the percentages, work out where the line crosses your threshold, or tell you how many categories that took. Those are the parts that make it a Pareto chart rather than a combo chart, and they are the parts this visual does for you.
The cut is not fixed at 80 percent. Set any threshold, and the chart marks the crossing point and states in plain words how many categories reach it. A long tail can be rolled into a single Other bar so the chart stays readable without losing the total.
Use Cases • Which defect types account for most of the scrap • Which customers or products make up most of the revenue • Which error codes drive most of the support tickets • Which cost lines to attack first in a reduction program • Which suppliers cause most of the late deliveries
